MOSCOW--Russia's consumer watchdog is threatening to ban a type of American bourbon, amidst a new round of sanctions the West has slapped Russia with over its involvement in the crisis in Ukraine, according to an agency report.

Rospotrebnadzor, the consumer watchdog, said it was preparing the paperwork to ban Kentucky bourbon whiskey Kentucky Gentleman, Interfax news agency reported citing the regulator's spokesperson.

On Monday the watchdog issued a statement saying the beverage had traces of phthalates, which could lead to cancer and fertility problems among other health issues. Boston-based Barton 1792 Distillery, which produces this type of bourbon, couldn't be immediately reached for comment.

Different Russian regulators in the past weeks have threatened to ban United States poultry imports and McDonald's products and in Russia as well as ban fruit from the European Union.

Bans on certain products and goods by Russian watchdogs have often coincided with political tensions with other nations.
