Macy's Inc. (M) plans to hire about 86,000 seasonal workers for the upcoming holiday season, an increase from about 83,000 last year.

Macy's said it has grown seasonal hiring in recent years to support increased sales from its strategy of "omnichannel" selling, or the the use of the Internet, stores and warehouses to quickly provide merchandise.

Macy's plans to hire about 10,000 workers to staff its online fulfillment megacenters. The retailer also plans to hire about 1,125 workers for its customer-service centers and 3,000 workers to staff instore fulfillment centers.

In addition, the company plans to hire more than 850 workers for its Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and other holiday events.

Plans for seasonal hiring this year has been uneven. Retailers typically hire temporary, part-time staff to help handle the higher traffic that occurs during the holidays.

GameStop Corp. (GME) announced plans to increase seasonal hiring by 47% this year, and Kohl's Corp. (KSS) plans to hire 67,000 workers, up from 50,000 a year ago.

Toys "R" Us and Target Corp. (TGT) both plan to hire the same number of employees as last year.
