Airbus Says Lan, Tam Have Shown Interest In A380 Order

SAO PAULO -(Dow Jones)- Chile's Lan Airlines (LFL, LAN.SN) and Brazil's Tam (TAM, TAMM4.BR), the airlines merging to form Latin America's biggest airline, have spoken with Airbus about the possibility of buying an A380 aircraft, Airbus said Thursday. The companies, which expect clearance in May to create the merged LATAM, have shown interest in buying the super jumbo jet, Airbus Vice President Rafael Alonso said through his press office while passing through Sao Paulo. His press office noted that Airbus has met with several airlines in the region, many of which have expressed interest in placing an order for the airplane. By 2030, Airbus expects to sell in Latin America 41 units of the mega-aircraft, which can seat more than 800 passengers. Brazil is expected to account for 26 of those orders, Airbus's press office said. So far, Airbus has yet to receive an order from Latin America, however. Earlier, the local news agency Agencia Estado reported that LATAM was studying the purchase of an A380. Tam didn't immediately return a phone call and email seeking comment. -By Paulo Winterstein, Dow Jones Newswires; 55-11-3544-7073; paulo.winterstein@dowjones.com
