Barclays PLC is lining up former J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. executive Jes Staley as its next chief executive, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The appointment, which is still subject to regulatory approval, could be made in the coming weeks, the person said.

Mr. Staley, who formerly ran J.P. Morgan's investment bank, is currently working at Blue Mountain Capital.

Barclays has been looking for a new CEO since summer, when its board fired Antony Jenkins.
