BEIJING, Nov. 9, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Honeywell (NYSE: HON) brought Nobel Laureate and American astrophysicist George Smoot to Beihang University, Beijing, China, for a two-day program that focused on his work that provided the strongest evidence yet that the Big Bang theory is correct.

George Smoot, 2006 Nobel Prize winner in physics, joins Honeywell at BUAA in Beijing on Nov. 9, 2016

Smoot, who received the Nobel Prize in physics in 2006, lectured in front of more than 1,000 students and faculty during the Honeywell Initiative for Science & Engineering (HISE), organized by Honeywell Hometown Solutions, the company's corporate citizenship initiative.  HISE aims to inspire university students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math by giving them hands-on exposure to Nobel Prize-winning laureates in physics and chemistry and direct interactions with Honeywell's top technologists and engineers.

Smoot delivered several lectures, shared his experiences about his personal path toward winning the Nobel Prize, and advised students to follow their dreams. "Don't lose your natural appetite for learning," Smoot said. "With knowledge, you have the power to make your mark on society."

"As one of China's leading universities, Beihang University has a key role to play in raising China's global standing through science and technology," said Xu Huibin, President, Beihang University. "With Honeywell's HISE program, students can experience the power of the academic and business world working together to solve problems."

"At Honeywell, we are blending physical products with software solutions to link people and businesses to the information they need to be more efficient, more productive, and more connected," said Stephen Shang, President, Honeywell China. "Honeywell is proud of our long-standing partnership with BUAA to cultivate the next generation of engineers who will distinguish themselves as role models of excellence and innovation in China."

Today marks the 11th time Honeywell has brought a Nobel laureate to China, and the fourth time to Beihang University. The award-winning program also has benefited university students in Malaysia, Mexico, the Czech Republic, India, and Romania.

In addition to HISE, Honeywell Hometown Solutions invites middle school teachers from across China to the Honeywell Educators at Space Academy and the Honeywell Green Boot Camp in the United States each year. Other corporate citizenship activities in China include bringing safe drinking water to rural schools in Western and Central China as part of the China Environmental Protection Foundation's Streams Action, and helping children avoid burns and injuries through its Safe Kids @ Home program in partnership with Safe Kids Worldwide.

Honeywell also sponsors research and development projects and internship opportunities for students in China as part of its STEM programming.

Smoot is an astrophysicist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and physics professor at the University of California at Berkeley. Among his many honors, Smoot has received the NASA Medal for Exceptional Scientific Achievement, the Albert Einstein Medal, and the Gruber Prize. A popular laureate, Smoot has appeared in several TV shows and commercials, including "The Big Bang Theory."
