Enabling compliance with tightening European Emission Controls

Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (MHPS), Yokohama Japan, received an order from HIDROELECTRICA DEL CANTABRICO, S.A. (HC: a company of EDP Group), for two sets of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) type DeNOx systems for installation at the company's Power Station Abono Unit 2 and Soto de Ribera Unit 3. These high-performance systems reduce emissions of NOx (nitrogen oxides), a cause of air pollution, by more than 80 percent. The systems for Abono Unit 2 and Soto de Ribera Units 3are scheduled to go into operation in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

The awarded DeNOx systems will be installed to thermal power stations located in the province of Asturias, north-northwest of Madrid, having an output of 560 megawatts (MW) and 361MW respectively. The DeNOx system to be installed will enable the power station to satisfy European regulations on thermal power plant emissions that are slated to be tightened in 2016, while also ensuring a stable and continuous operation. The thermal power stations are located near the town of Gijon, which is a famous sightseeing spot for its beautiful beach. The installation of the DeNOx system will play a large role in the protection of the local environment.

The DeNOx system awarded features high-performance plate-type catalysts independently developed by MHPS. They achieve outstanding NOx removal efficiency to meet the needs of a wide range of operating loads. MHPS will be in charge of all aspects from designing and manufacture to test operation, and TSK ELECTRONICA Y ELECTRICIDAD, S.A., MHPS's local consortium partner, will be in charge of local supply, civil engineering and entire installation works.

Prior to receipt of this order, MHPS had supplied a flue gas desulfurization (FGD) system, which removes sulfur oxides (SOx), to both thermal power plants in 2005. These two units are being operated in good condition. The new order for DeNOx system reflects the high evaluation accorded by HC to the performance demonstrated by these previously installed FGD systems and our good reference of installation of DeNOx system to existing power plant around the world.

Going forward MHPS will continue to proactively propose its high-efficiency DeSOx and DeNOx systems to the global markets, particularly in Europe where demand is expected to increase in tandem with tightening restrictions on emissions. In this way the company aims to make significant contributions to enabling steady power supplies while simultaneously reducing environmental loads.
