Danish toy maker the Lego Group said Thursday it will launch a collection of toys based on Disney's (DIS) multibillion-dollar "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.

Lego will launch nine new building sets based on the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films in the spring of 2011, which will also see the premiere of the fourth installment of the film series: "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides."

Disney Interactive Studios, Time Warner-owned TT Games and the LEGO Group also announced that LEGO Pirates of Caribbean: The Video Game is scheduled for release on multiple video game platforms in May 2011.

Previously, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been held by Montreal-based Mega Brands (MB.T). Lego is a privately-held company that is currently ranked as the third-largest toymaker in North America after Mattel (MAT) and Hasbro (HAS), with total sales of 11.66 billion Danish kroner ($2.15 billion) in 2009.
