Goldman Sachs Group Inc. appointed one of its top financing bankers to a new role helping to plot the strategy of its trading businesses.

Jim Esposito, co-head of the Wall Street firm's financing group, was named chief strategy officer of the securities division, Goldman's senior trading executives wrote Wednesday in a memorandum sent to employees.

The role is a new one for Goldman, whose trading business has been beset by a slew of new rules designed to rein in risks at the world's biggest banks.
