BRUSSELS--European Union regulators Wednesday approved Germany's
aid measures for car makers Volkswagen AG (VOW.XE) and Porsche
(PAH3.XE), but said it was approving less than one third of the
country's planned state support for BMW (BMW.XE).
The EU's executive arm, the European Commission, said the BMW
plant in Leipzig, Germany, needed only 17 million euros ($23,1
million) out of the EUR45 million that was initially planned by
Berlin.
It said support worth EUR43.67 million to Porsche, also in
Leipzig, was in line with EU state aid rules.
Separately, the Commission launched an in-depth probe into
Hungary's state support measures for Volkswagen's Audi in Győr,
amid concerns that the aid could harm competition.
The commission closed a formal investigation into regional aid
for U.S. car maker Ford in Spain, after authorities reduced the aid
from EUR24.4 million to EUR11.2 million.
