SHANGHAI--China's Jiangling Motors Corp. (000550.SZ), which is 30%-owned by Ford and makes light commercial and sport utility vehicles, will acquire Taiyuan Changan Heavy Truck Co., marking the U.S. car maker's first entry into the world's largest heavy truck market. Ford said in a statement Wednesday its Chinese unit will acquire the local heavy truck maker from China Changan Automobile Group and China South Industries Group Corp. The statement didn't disclose the financial terms of the acquisition, but said the deal is subject to approval from China's relevant government bodies. "JMC's acquisition represents a great opportunity to continue to expand the breadth of our business in China across vehicle segments," said Dave Schoch, chairman and chief executive for Ford Motor China. "A strong heavy truck operation like Taiyuan will complement Ford's existing passenger car and light commercial vehicle operations here in the world's largest and fastest-growing vehicle market," he said. China is the world's largest market for heavy trucks, with nearly one million units sold last year, more than North America, Europe and South America combined.
