The ComEd Smart Ideas Energy Efficiency Program® helps homeowners, apartment dwellers and businesses reduce their energy use

As we wait on the arrival of the real hot days of summer, ComEd wants it customers to know that they can still take advantage of our Smart Ideas Energy Efficiency Program to lessen their energy use and save money on their utility bills. The program, which can help customers save all year round, offers a variety of ways to save, including assessments, rebates, discounts, and recycling.

The ComEd Smart Ideas Program is one of the largest efficiency programs in the nation and has produced more than $1 Billion in savings on customer’s electric bills and eliminated 16.5 Billion pounds of CO2 emissions from the atmosphere. In addition, through the program, customers have reduced their energy usage by more than 10.9 million megawatt-hours, enough to power more than one million homes for a year.

“Our goal is to make our customers lives easier and provide them with tools that give them control of how they want to use energy,” said Val Jensen, senior vice president of Customer Operations, ComEd. “When we launched this program we committed to providing our customers with more and easier options to help them make smart choices that would enable them to save energy, money and the environment - and ComEd’s Energy Efficiency program continues to deliver on that promise.”

Below are Smart Idea offerings for customers who are looking for ways to save.

Assessments – Customers can receive a FREE energy assessment of their home or apartment. During the assessment, homeowners will receive personalized savings recommendations, as well as free installation of energy-saving products, including ENERGY STAR® certified CFLs, programmable thermostats, showerheads, faucet aerators for bathrooms and kitchens, and hot water pipe insulation. ENERGY STAR® certified LEDs are also available for purchase at a discount and include FREE installation.

Rebates – ComEd offers a variety of rebates up to $500 on select ENERGY STAR® certified appliances including refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, electric clothes dryers and qualifying high-efficiency equipment and services. Customers can also receive rebates up to $400 on energy efficient heat pumps and central air conditioners and up to $1,500 to insulate and air seal their home. Discounts – Customers can advantage of instant in-store discounts on select ENERGY STAR® certified CFLs and LEDs. Simply look for the “Lower Price” sticker at participating retail stores to save. CFLs and LEDs use about 75 percent less energy and last longer than traditional incandescent light bulbs. CFLs last about 10 times longer, and each one could save you up to $62 in energy costs over its lifetime. LEDs last up to 50 times longer, and each one could save you up to $230 in energy costs over its lifetime.

Recycling – Customers can retire their old fridge or freezer by scheduling a free pickup from ComEd. Old refrigerators and freezers can cost up to $150 a year in electricity. ComEd will pick up the customer’s old, working fridge or freezer for FREE, recycle it in an environmentally responsible way, and send the customer $50.

ComEd is focused on providing our customers with more access to programs and energy options that help them personalize their electric service. Last spring ComEd proposed new legislation -- ComEd Future Energy Plan -- that aims to expand access to renewable energy, increase energy efficiency, enhance resiliency and security of the system and meet the growing demand among energy consumers for more choice and personalized services. ComEd plans to revisit this legislation in the fall.

ComEd also offers the following smart tips to help customers further manage their energy usage and reduce their electric bill.

  • Program your thermostat. Setting your thermostat 10 degrees higher in the summer when you leave your home and before you go to sleep could save you up to 15 percent a year on cooling costs.
  • Maintain Your Air Conditioner. Cooling your home can be the largest use of energy during the summer months. Make sure your air conditioning unit is clear of debris and has a clean air filter. Your air conditioner will last longer and save energy by working more efficiently.
  • Set your fridge and freezer to the recommended temperature settings. Set your fridge temperature between 35 and 38 degrees, and your freezer at 0 degrees. Otherwise you’re just overcooling your food
