Each Exelon utility – BGE, ComEd and PECO – recognized for emergency response efforts by EEI

The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) has awarded PECO its Emergency Recovery Award for outstanding efforts in restoring electric service to more than 715,000 customers impacted by Ice Storm Nika in February 2014. PECO and sister utilities BGE and ComEd were part of only 12 utilities nationwide to receive awards during the EEI CEO Conference and Board Meeting in Washington, D.C.

“Thousands of PECO employees, contractors and support crews from utilities across North America worked around the clock in challenging conditions to come to the aid of our customers,” said Craig Adams, PECO president and CEO. “This is an award that every PECO employee should be proud to call their own.”

BGE, in Baltimore, also was recognized for the company’s response to Ice Storm Nika. ComEd, in Chicago was recognized with the award for the company’s response to a July 2014 derecho and tornado event.

“It is an honor that all three of the Exelon utilities have been recognized for their significant efforts to serve our customers,” said Denis O’Brien, CEO of Exelon Utilities. “This recognition is a true reflection of the commitment of each and every Exelon employee to world class performance. It also demonstrates the value of being able to share best practices and drive improved performance as part of a family of utilities.”

Ice Storm Nika was the second most damaging storm in PECO’s nearly 135 year history, next to Hurricane Sandy. The storm caused widespread damage across PECO’s service territory during a 24 hour period. PECO restored 91 percent of all customers impacted in less than 72 hours; 98 percent of customers were restored within five days; and all customers were restored within seven days. PECO crews were joined by local contractors and crews from Illinois, Ohio, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, Alabama, Arkansas, and as far as Canada. More than 95 miles of wire, 520 poles, 2,505 cross arms, 302 transformers and 14,422 fuses were needed to repair the damage and restore service to customers.

“PECO's exemplary efforts to restore service demonstrate the industry's commitment to serving its customers,” said Tom Kuhn, president of Edison Electric Institute. “We commend the crews who braved dangerous conditions in the wake of this severe storm as they diligently worked to safely and quickly restore service.”

The Emergency Recovery Award is presented annually to U.S. and foreign-based companies to recognize emergency response efforts in restoring electric service that has been disrupted by severe weather conditions or other natural events. Award recipients were chosen by a panel of industry judges following an international nomination process.
