International stocks trading in New York were mixed on Tuesday. The Bank of New York index of American depositary receipts fell 0.25% to 156.51. The European index decreased 0.39% to 154.38, the Asian index dropped 0.01% to 151.15, the Latin American index rose 0.23% to 303.08 and the emerging markets index increased 0.09% to 298.33. Among the companies with shares that actively traded was British American Tobacco PLC (BTI, BATS.LN).

British American Tobacco on Tuesday said it will suspend its share-buyback program from July 30 after agreeing to invest $4.7 billion in Reynolds American Inc. (RAI) to retain its 42% stake in the company. The decision follows a deal by Reynolds American to buy fellow U.S. tobacco company Lorillard Inc. (LO) for $27.4 billion. British American shares fell 1.9% to $120.61.

Azul Linhas Aereas Brasileiras SA (AZULAZUL.SN), Brazil's third-largest carrier, reached a preliminary agreement with Embraer SA (ERJ, EMBR3.BR), covering orders for 30 of the Brazilian plane builder's new version of its E195 jetliner and purchase rights on 20 more. However, Embraer shares fell 1.4% to $39.03.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA, RDSA.LN) said it made a third major oil discovery in the Norphlet play in deep waters of the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Shares fell 0.3% to $82.

Novartis AG (NVS, NOVN.VX) and Google Inc. (GOOG) are joining forces to work on a smart contact lens that monitors blood-sugar levels and corrects vision in a new way, the latest in a series of technology products designed to monitor body functions. Novartis shares fell 0.1% to $90.14.
