Awards acknowledge technologies that reduce landfill waste and
provide a sustainable alternative to keep canned foods and
beverages fresh
The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE: DOW) today received recognition
for its global leadership in sustainability with two 2016
Sustainability Awards from the Business Intelligence Group. The
Sustainability Awards honor those who have made sustainability an
integral part of their business practice. The Sustainability
Initiative of the Year Award went to RETAIN™ Polymer Modifiers, and
the Sustainability Product of the Year Award went to CANVERA™
Polyolefin Dispersions.
“Dow continues to create breakthrough innovations that advance
the well-being of society,” said A.N. Sreeram, senior R&D vice
president and chief technology officer for Dow. “The passion,
creativity and expertise of our people drive innovative,
sustainable solutions that meet the needs of our customers while
making the world better. Both of our products recognized, RETAIN™
and CANVERA™, demonstrate the power of innovation to solve world
challenges.”
Dr. Neil Hawkins, Dow’s chief sustainability officer and
corporate vice president of Environment, Health and Safety, added,
“Closing resource loops is critical for the future of the planet.
These award-winning products address this issue head-on, reducing
waste headed to landfills and preserving food in a more sustainable
way.”
Sustainability Initiative of the Year: RETAIN™ Polymer
Modifiers help make plastic packaging more
sustainable. This resin compatibilizer gives post-industrial
barrier film scrap and post-consumer barrier packaging a second
chance at life by allowing them to be recycled without compromising
performance, aesthetics or efficiency in processing.
RETAIN™ Polymer Modifiers are also an integral part of the new
RecycleReady Technology for high barrier applications, an
innovative solution that enables recycling of flexible packaging
for applications such as granola and nuts. The invention reduces
the variety of materials used in flexible packaging that has
previously hindered recycling, while ensuring barrier protection,
durability and sealability of the package.
Breakthrough packaging solutions containing RETAIN™ Polymer
Modifier can help divert packaging waste from landfill or
incineration, increasing recycling yields and further enabling the
circular economy for plastic packaging.
Sustainability Product of the Year: CANVERA™
Polyolefin Dispersions provides progressive food and beverage
brand owners with a replacement for epoxy coating systems, made
from polyolefin resins and without use of BPA and other materials
of concern to consumers and regulators.
CANVERA™ uses Dow’s proprietary and patented BLUEWAVE™
technology to create an aqueous polyolefin dispersion that can be
applied directly to metal surfaces in the same equipment used for
current epoxy coatings. CANVERA™ makes a very thin, protective,
thermoplastic lining with excellent food and flavor retention,
adhesion, corrosion protection, and film flexibility. CANVERA™
polyolefin dispersions utilize the existing can-making
infrastructure, facilitating world-wide adoption of this long-term,
cost-effective, breakthrough technology.
“Our judges made it clear that Dow should be recognized for
their sustainability efforts,” said Russ Fordyce, managing director
for Business Intelligence Group. “Their innovation and leadership
should serve as a model for organizations around the globe.
Congratulations to the entire team.”
