Dow Jones News
Ukraine has paid $80 million out of the $440 million it owes
Russian gas monopoly OAO Gazprom for February gas deliveries,
Ukraine's Energy Minister Yury Prodan told Interfax news agency
Wednesday.
Mr. Prodan also said that Gazprom has made no steps to cut off
gas deliveries to Ukraine.
On Friday, Gazprom Chief Executive Officer Alexei Miller said
Ukraine owes the company a total of $1.89 billion for gas
deliveries and had failed to meet the Friday deadline for payment
of its February deliveries. He warned that failing to pay the bill
could cause Gazprom to stop natural-gas deliveries to Ukraine.
Mr. Prodan also said Ukraine is planning to purchase 27 billion
cubic meters to 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas during 2014,
down from the 30 billion cubic meters to 40 billion cubic meters
per year the country had been importing from Russia in the
past.
