Who should lead the digital agenda in our
business? Who should be kept far away?Do we need a chief digital
officer? What’s the role of the CIO? And the CMO?
CSC’s Leading Edge Forum (LEF), a global research and thought
leadership community, has today launched the report which
summarizes the findings and conclusions from its latest research
project, Digital leadership in the C-Suite, designed to help
CEOs and other members of the C-suite establish the leadership they
urgently need to survive, compete and prosper in the digital
age.
According to Richard Bhanap, a leading international advisor on
digital business transformation and the author of the report,
“Digitization is disrupting companies out of existence and
transforming entire industries. Its growing importance across all
sectors is creating very real leadership tensions in the boardroom.
Success with digital is not just about the technology and business
strategy – getting the politics of digital and the associated power
game right are critical in large, complex businesses.”
Conducted in late 2014 and the first half of 2015, the research
project involved surveys and interviews with C-level executives
from a wide range of large multinationals across industry sectors.
Findings from the research include:
- Less than 40% of companies believe that
their business leaders are equipped to harness and lead
digitization.
- Most chief information officers (CIOs)
feel that the digital agenda should be theirs by default, but in
reality fewer than 35% of today’s CIOs are expected to be tasked
with leading digital transformation.
- Many chief marketing officers (CMOs)
also make a persuasive case to own and drive the digital agenda but
the scope of digital will inevitably extend well beyond their remit
and into functions such as R&D and the supply chain.
- As a result, many firms have hired or
are considering hiring a chief digital officer (CDO), and that
directly impacts the dynamics of the top team.
The report provides clear guidance on navigating the choices and
lays out a comprehensive five-point digital leadership action plan.
“There is a real risk, once a CDO-like appointment has been made,
of executives breathing a sigh of relief and simply abdicating all
this ‘new-fangled digital stuff’ to them. That’s the fastest route
to executive obsolescence and accelerated retirement,” said Bhanap.
“Digital is not just the CDO’s job. C-suite members need to make
digital everyone’s business,” he added.
“This report is a must read for CEOs, CIOs and other C-level
executives involved in leading or shaping their company’s digital
agenda. We are already helping our clients with practical
approaches, advice and guidance based on the findings,” concluded
Richard Davies, managing director of the Leading Edge Forum.
