CALGARY, April 25, 2016 /CNW/ - Canadian Pacific, the CP
Police Service (CPPS) and the City of
Hamilton joined students from Queen Victoria Elementary
School today in unveiling Painting a Safer Community, which, as
part of Rail Safety Week, showcases student artwork that highlights
the importance of safety.
"Canadian Pacific is proud of the relationship we have with the
over 1100 communities we operate in," said Bill Law, CPPS District Inspector - Ontario. "We all have a stake in community
safety. Seeing students express themselves through art while
teaching the community about rail safety is outstanding."
Each year, CP partners with Operation Lifesaver and other
stakeholders for Rail Safety Week, which presents an opportunity to
remind motorists, cyclists and pedestrians that any route that
includes illegally crossing railway tracks or using railway tracks
as a short cut is the wrong route.
CP partnered with the City and the school to teach children
about rail safety through art. As a learning and beautification
project, Grade 4/5 students from Queen Victoria Elementary painted
rail and community safety themed artwork to be hung on a school
fence that backs on to railway tracks.
"Once again, our good friends at CP are demonstrating a
commitment to work collaboratively with their neighbours in our
downtown," said Jason Farr, City of
Hamilton Councillor - Ward 2. "I know that many of us look forward
to the Corktown Paint Project and we are grateful to have such a
devoted community partner."
During the week of April 25 - May
1, CP and CPPS will conduct rail safety blitzes in
communities across our network collaboratively with other police
agencies and schools to educate motorists, pedestrians, and the
public about the role we each play in staying safe around railway
property.
"I would like to recognize the time, effort and care that the
teacher, educational assistant and students put into this project,"
said Biljana Arsovic, Principal, Queen Victoria Elementary School.
"These wonderful works of art will enhance the beauty of the rail
trail."
