• $100,000 donated to American Diabetes Association
  • Championing preventive care

Cigna is donating $100,000 to the American Diabetes Association (Association) as the latest wave of its prevention campaign, “Go. Know. Take Control.” The campaign encourages people to get annual physicals to know their health risks. Cigna’s objective is to champion preventive care, which ties to Cigna’s business goal of keeping people well so they can lead healthy, productive lives and reduce the risk of financial hardship from health care costs.

With Cigna's donation, Cigna is turning up its rallying cry to stop diabetes – a disease that 21 million people across the country are diagnosed with, according to the Association, with another eight million who are undiagnosed. The donation builds on Cigna's three-month call-to-action across its Facebook and Twitter channels, in partnership with the Association, to share an important message: “Had your annual checkup? Share this to inspire others to get theirs. #StopDiabetes. #CheckupsCount.”

“A preventive care visit is a powerful weapon in the fight against diabetes as it helps identify those at risk of diabetes and it begins the needed interventions to help manage the illness,” said Cigna’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Alan Muney.

Alicia McAuliffe-Fogarty, PhD, vice president of the lifestyle management team at the American Diabetes Association, said “Preventive health care, such as annual checkups, is a key part of a healthy lifestyle. The Association appreciates Cigna’s support in raising awareness around checkups for everyone who is looking to manage, prevent or delay diabetes and lead a healthy life.”

According to The Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Americans use preventive care services at only about half the recommended rate. The campaign encourages all consumers to get their annual physical – which is included in a suite of preventive services covered by most health plans. Cigna’s goal is to encourage checkups to help save 100,000 lives a year, the number of lives that the CDC estimates would be saved if everyone received his or her recommended preventive care.
