The National Football League reached agreement with CBS and NBC to share its Thursday night prime-time package of games along with the league-owned cable channel NFL Network, the companies announced Monday.

Under the terms of the deal, CBS and NBC would each carry five Thursday night games that also will be simulcast on the NFL Network. The NFL Network also will carry several games exclusively. The deal will cost the networks about $225 million each, people familiar with the matter said.

The Wall Street Journal earlier reported news of the Thursday Night deal.

The new agreement is a marked departure from the previous two Thursday Night Football contracts, which were with CBS alone.

For the NFL, by splitting the package between CBS and NBC, it will increase the rights fees it receives from the $300 million CBS paid this season.

The NFL is also planning an online package for the Thursday games that will create an additional revenue stream. The league said it is in active discussions with prospective digital partners and expects to announce a deal soon.
