CBS Corp. said Showtime Networks Chairman and Chief Executive Matthew C. Blank plans to turn over the CEO role to a key lieutenant, David Nevins, next year as part of a succession plan.

Mr. Nevins is currently president at Showtime, a subsidiary of CBS, where he is responsible for creative development and program acquisition, marketing and other duties. In his new role, he will add responsibility for all aspects of the division.

Mr. Blank, who has been with Showtime since 1988 and has been chairman and CEO since 1995, will stay on as chairman. Before joining Showtime, Mr. Blank spent 12 years with rival Home Box Office Inc., departing as a consumer marketing executive.

During Mr. Blank's tenure at Showtime, the company expanded from three premium cable networks—Showtime, The Movie Channel and Flix—to 27 digital channels.

The network has launched series including "The Affair," "Ray Donovan," "Masters of Sex" and "Homeland" during Mr. Nevins's time with Showtime. Previously, Mr. Nevins served as president of Imagine Television from 2002 to 2010.
