DUBLIN, Ohio, July 9, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its continued commitment to supporting future pharmacists, Cardinal Health announced that 10 pharmacy schools across the country will collectively receive more than $1 million in funding through the Cardinal Health Pharmacy Scholarship Program in 2015.

The company has donated more than $5 million to 28 universities through this program since its launch in June 2011. All scholarship winners will also receive an all-expenses paid trip to attend a pharmacy ownership workshop at University of South Carolina.

The schools selected to participate in this year's Cardinal Health Pharmacy Scholarship Program were chosen based on their commitment to advancing the independent pharmacy profession. These schools offer curricula focused on operating an independent pharmacy; support student-run chapters of the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA); endorse internship and co-op programs with local independent retail pharmacies; and demonstrate high post-graduate placement rates in community pharmacy settings.

"We understand the impact independent pharmacists have on their communities, and the significant role they play in providing cost-effective care that improves patients' health," said Jon Giacomin, chief executive officer of Cardinal Health's Pharmaceutical segment. "Supporting future community pharmacy leaders through this scholarship program is an honor, and we continue to be inspired by the next generation of innovative, patient-focused pharmacy owners as they begin serving their communities."

The Cardinal Health Pharmacy Scholarship Program schools that earned funding in 2015 include:

  • Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee
  • North Dakota State University in Fargo, North Dakota
  • Ohio Northern University in Ada, Ohio
  • Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama
  • South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota
  • University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia
