Global stocks were little changed Tuesday as investors looked ahead to key company earnings reports and central bank meetings later in the week.

The Stoxx Europe 600 inched up 0.5% in early trade, paring losses from the previous session. Shares of BP PLC were up over 3% after earnings from the oil company beat expectations. Orange SA also gained after France's largest telecom company reported a rise in first-quarter revenue.

Markets in Asia were mostly lower, following modest losses on Wall Street. Stocks in Japan fell 0.5% as the yen extended gains against the dollar ahead of a Bank of Japan meeting on Thursday. Market participants agree that the Bank of Japan ought to do more to combat deflation, but are divided on whether the bank will act at its meeting this week.

Investors globally were also cautious ahead of a meeting of Federal Reserve officials on Wednesday, where officials are unlikely to raise interest rates, but could drop hints about whether they might act in June.
