NCR Corp. (NCR) this summer will begin selling new DVDs from its
Blockbuster-branded video-rental kiosks, Bloomberg News reports
Friday, citing a company executive.
Alex Camara, president of unit NCR Entertainment, said in an
interview that his company is in talks with movie studios to
provide new releases for rental through the kiosks at $2 a day,
double the current $1.
NCR is expanding its kiosk business to about 10,000 locations
this year and is adding products in competition with Coinstar
Inc.'s (CSTR) Redbox dispensers and Netflix Inc.'s (NFLX)
mail-order movie service.
Typically, kiosk and mail-order retailers buy rental copies of
new releases from stores, due to Hollywood studios' refusal to sell
directly to the low-cost purveyors.
