AIR TRANSPORT SERVICES

Injunction Granted Against Cargo Strike

A judge on Wednesday granted a temporary injunction requiring striking cargo airline pilots to return to work after their action delayed customer deliveries to Amazon.com Inc. and other shippers.

Pilots at ABX Air Inc., a unit of Air Transport Services Group Inc., struck Tuesday morning. In a complaint filed in federal court Tuesday, the unit said Christmas shopping and deliveries have already been disrupted. A lawyer for ABX said the Ohio judge had granted a temporary restraining order late Wednesday.

ABX Air President John Starkovich said in the statement that he expects the dispute -- the pilots claimed that short staffing had left crew members working without adequate time off -- would be worked out in "negotiations and through arbitration."

Rick Ziebarth, an ABX pilot and executive council chairman of the Teamsters local representing pilots, said in a statement late Wednesday that ABX still must "take real steps to hire and retain" pilots needed to serve ambitious expansion plans by ABX's high-profile customers.

AIRBUS GROUP

Long-Haul Plane Makes First Flight

Airbus Group SE completed the first flight of its newest long-haul plane on Thursday and reaffirmed a commitment to deliver at least 50 of a sister model by year-end despite repeated delays.

The A350-1000 long-range plane, which typically will seat about 365 passengers, flew for more than four hours from Airbus's Toulouse, France, base. Airbus plans to begin customer deliveries of the twin-engine passenger jet in the second half of next year, a few months later than initially forecast. Delays in new plane programs aren't unusual.

The new jetliner competes with Boeing Co.'s popular 777 widebody jet. Boeing is working on an updated version, the 777X, which will seat 400 or more passengers and is due to enter service around the end of the decade.

The A350-1000 from Airbus is the European plane maker's longest still-in-production airliner at over 242 feet.

FIAT CHRYSLER

Auto Maker Reduces Prices of Fiat Models

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, scrambling to keep its lineup of small European city cars afloat in a U.S. new-car market enthralled with pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles, is slashing prices on its lineup of Fiat 500 city cars and offering its U.S. dealers financial support.

Part of a wider shake-up of the Fiat brand in the U.S., lowering sticker prices by as much as $3,900 is central to jump-starting a six-year effort to make the brand viable in the U.S.

List price for the Fiat 500, a two-door city car, will be reduced 12% to $14,995 in 2017, down from $16,995. That price is much more comparable to General Motors Co.'s $13,000 Chevrolet Spark and Ford Motor Co's Fiesta, priced at $14,090.

The 2017 Fiat Pop, a subcompact car, starts at $14,995, also $2,000 less than the 2016 model. The Fiat 500c Pop convertible will cost $16,490 in 2017, compared with $20,395 in 2016, a nearly $4,000 drop in price. The pricing changes were first reported by Automotive News.

POTASH CORPORATION

Fertilizer Company Plans Job Cuts

Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Inc. said on Wednesday it would cut 140 jobs at its Cory potash mine and curtail production at two other operations in its home province as it focuses on lower-cost mines amid slumping prices.

The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based fertilizer company, which earlier this year agreed to merge with peer Agrium Inc., said it plans to drop production of one type of potash at Cory, lowering the mine's operational capability by 43% to about 800,000 metric tons of the key fertilizer ingredient.

The job cuts, which include 100 permanent positions and 40 temporary, total about 29% of the mine's workforce. The mine will continue to employ about 350 workers, Potash said. At the end of September, Potash had more than 5,000 employees overall, including around 2,300 in its potash operations.
