Qatar Airways said Friday it has ordered 40 Boeing Co. jets worth $11.7 billion at list prices, and may also buy single-aisle planes that could replace aircraft that were due to be supplied by Airbus Group SE.

State-owned Qatar Airways plans to acquire 30 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners and 10 of its 777-300ERs, a big boost to the latter's slow sales.

Qatar Airways said it also signed a letter of intent to acquire up to 60 Boeing 737 Max 8 jets worth $6.9 billion at list prices.

The airline has already canceled orders for four Airbus A320neo single-aisle jets, having voiced concerns about delivery delays and performance issues. It still has deals in place for 30 A320neo and 16 of the larger A321neo model.

The deal moves Boeing closer to its target for matching orders with deliveries this year, having lagged behind the goal all year.

Prior to the Qatar announcement, Boeing has booked deals for just 12 777-300ERs so far this year, excluding cancellations, and needs to secure around 40 a year to bridge a gap to the production of a new version of the plane or face cutting output rates further. Qatar Airways has 60 of the new 777X jets on order.
