Company representatives to offer water saving tips, free conservation tools and information on rebates

California American Water representatives will visit 8,000 homes over three weeks beginning this Saturday, July 18 to offer a range of water saving tips, free water-wise hose nozzles and information on turf replacement rebates and related programs.

The water conservation “Walk and Talks” with California American Water customers are the first of their kind in Southern California and come as the Company’s customers in Thousand Oaks work to reduce their water use by 32 percent to meet Governor Jerry Brown’s conservation targets.

Water conservation team members will be armed with brochures, refrigerator magnets, hose nozzles that automatically stop spraying when not in use, and information on turf replacement rebates, as well as rebates for high-efficiency clothes washers, dishwashers, low-flow toilets and rain barrels. The dozen or so walkers, who will wear blue polos, are expected to reach about 400 homes a day.

“California American Water is taking this unprecedented step because we’re facing an historic drought, and we need to be as water efficient as possible,” said Garry Hofer, Southern California director of operations. “Many of customers have stepped up and made great progress. Customers in Ventura County have reduced their water use by 26 percent, but we need to do more to weather this drought. We believe talking with customers at their homes – about water use, rebates, and related topics – will help us achieve our conservation goals.”

Four dry years in a row have decimated our water supply and reduced reservoir levels statewide. Last year was the hottest in state history, producing the lowest snowpack ever recorded in the Sierras. So this summer Thousand Oaks faces the worst drought in our community’s history. In response, Governor Jerry Brown ordered strict conservation targets throughout California.

California American Water is committed to ensuring quality water continues to flow not only today, but far into the future, because water is essential for public health, fire protection, economic development, and our quality of life.

“It’s going to take a significant effort, but together we can meet our water challenges head on and create a better community for everyone,” said Hofer.
