The U.S. government and state governments with environmental
claims against Grupo Mexico SAB's (GMEXICO.MX) U.S. subsidiary
Asarco LLC have been paid $1.79 billion as part of the unit's exit
from bankruptcy protection, a source familiar with the case
said.
The Mexican mining and railroad company said Wednesday night
that Asacro had exited Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
As part of that exit, the U.S. government and 19 states have
been paid $1.79 billion to cover the Arizona-based copper miner's
past environmental liabilities, the source said. The money will be
used for environmental cleanup and restoration at contaminated
Asarco mining sites.
Officials with the Justice, Interior and Agriculture Departments
are scheduled to hold a conference call with the press Thursday
afternoon to discuss the case.
