Antitrust regulators at the U.S. Department of Justice said Thursday that they support a plan by the Associated Press to create a digital news registry designed to protect its content online from unauthorized uses.

The AP also plans to open the registry to other news outlets that want to use the database to license and protect their material online.

Assistant Attorney General Christine Varney, the department's antitrust chief, said the AP's proposed registry "may provide a new, efficient way for news content users to identify applicable terms of use and purchase licenses for Internet news content."

The AP's registry would tag and track its digital content online to detect unauthorized use of its material. It would also facilitate licensing and distribution of Internet news content.

The AP has billed the registry as a way for news content providers to generate revenue online, while reducing the ability of Internet sites to copy and post news stories without permission.
