Abercrombie & Fitch Co. on Tuesday elevated Fran Horowitz, the head of its Hollister brand, to the new role of merchandising chief and announced the departure of another top executive.

Christos Angelides, the retailer's brand president since October 2014, has left the company, Abercrombie said.

With Mr. Angelides departure, Ms. Horowitz will now assume responsibility for all of Abercrombie's brands, effective immediately. She has held executive and merchandising roles at Ann Inc., Express Inc. and Bloomingdales.

Mr. Angelides and Ms. Horowitz have been in contention for the chief executive role at Abercrombie, which has been vacant since late 2014. Both joined the retailer in 2014 as part of its turnaround efforts.

Abercrombie has been struggling to reinvent itself after its formula for attracting teens with logo-emblazoned shirts and sex-tinged marketing faltered.

Arthur Martinez, the company's executive chairman, said in a news release that Abercrombie is on track to deliver sequential improvement in comparable sales and meet its profit expectations for its fiscal fourth quarter.

In the third quarter, Abercrombie's profit more than doubled, as its effort to revamp its brand and wean customers off heavy discounts paid off. Still, sales excluding newly opened or closed stores fell 1%.
