Schools Minister to Address Geography Teachers' Conference
SHEFFIELD, England, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Over 500 geography enthusiasts,
including teachers from across the UK and
visitors from the United States, Romania, Belgium,Cyprus, Eire, the
Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Slovenia, South Africa, Japan and Spain,
are due to converge on Canterbury from 5-7 April for the Annual Conference of
the Geographical Association.
Delegates will hear over 40 lectures, take part in 40 workshops, join
field visits, and talk with colleagues - all with the aim of improving the
study and learning of geography. The finest exhibition of geography teaching
materials in the UK is also a major attraction.
GA Chief Executive David Lambert says: "In recent years geography has had
an acute image problem. It has been squeezed in the curriculum and has
experienced falling exam entries. We are confident that this is changing:
there has never been a more exciting time to be involved in geography
teaching, but the potential of geography to excite deep and concerned
interest in young people has not always been well understood by policy
makers." GA President Peter Fox will open the Conference on Monday 5 April at
11.30 am with a call for teachers to grasp the potential for new technology
in the classroom. "Geographers have been quick to use new technology, from
glass lantern slides in the nineteenth century to digital imagery today,
"says Fox. "Geography teachers tend to be leaders in this field, because
technology helps bring the world to learners and to spark their
imaginations." Stephen Twigg MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Schools will
address delegates on Tuesday 6 April at 11.00 am.
Note to Editors: The Geographical Association is an independent subject association with a
