Capital gets Heart burn at breakfast
Heart 106.2's breakfast duo Jono Coleman and Harriet Scott have powered ahead in
London's battle for breakfast. The gap between Heart 106.2's breakfast show and
Capital 95.8's show has narrowed to the lowest ever. In an average half hour,
the gap in audience between the two shows is now down to just 33,000 listeners
compared to 149,000 only three months ago.
As the gap at breakfast narrows, Heart 106.2 and Capital 95.8 are neck and neck
in the overall fight for market share in the key London territory. Market share
for Heart 106.2 has jumped from 5.8% to 6.5% over the past 3 months with
Capital 95.8 posting a decline from 7.9% to 6.6% over the same period. This
reinforces just how successful Heart 106.2 has been in attracting and retaining
listeners over the past 2 years:
July 2002 - the gap was over 1 million listeners
July 2003 - gap is down to just over 750,000
May 2004 - the gap narrows to 550,000
July 2004 - that gap stands at just 178,000 - the smallest ever!
Elsewhere, 100.7 Heart FM in the Midlands posted healthy year on year audience
gains and the Galaxy Network retains its title as the UK's number one commercial
youth radio brand, beating rival Kiss UK Network by more than 6.5 million hours.
Year on year, LBC has seen an improvement in both reach and hours, with the
flagship station, LBC 97.3 increasing total hours by 16.3% over the 12 month
period. Excellent progress has been made at LBC 97.3 in refining the
demographic profile of the station: 48% of the audience are now under 45s and
65% of listeners are ABC1, up from 28% and 57% respectively when we relaunched
the station in January 2003.
