Smith Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Public Health Policy Expert To Spearhead Indoor Air Quality Initiative ATLANTA, May 23 /PRNewswire/ -- To further its mission to improve indoor air quality, the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute (GEI) has named Carl E. Smith as Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director. This is a new position at GEI, an independent, non-profit organization that establishes and promotes indoor air quality. GEI manages stringent testing for thousands of commercial and consumer products so that they might earn the GREENGUARD seal of approval. "Carl's broad-based experience in the office furniture manufacturing industry and his expertise in public policy and health advocacy will further expand the awareness and importance of the GREENGUARD Certification Program," said Marilyn S. Black, Ph.D., founder of GEI. "His ability to reach out to both public and private entities and his understanding of the economic and health implications of indoor air quality issues will support GEI's national and international initiatives." As CEO and Executive Director, Smith will represent GEI in both the public and private arenas, develop strategic relationships with public interest/health groups, government authorities, professional and trade organizations, as well as with industry certification participants. For more than ten years, Smith was employed at Steelcase, Inc., the largest office furniture manufacturer in the world, where he held various senior level positions including Director Corporate Marketing and General Manager. Smith has served as a senior budget analyst on the U.S. Senate Budget Committee and as a staff member for the U.S. House Ways and & Means Committee. He has also worked in public affairs for EDS Corporation and American Medical International. Smith also has extensive non-profit experience including as Chairman of the Board for the Glaucoma Research Foundation, a global non-profit focused on finding a cure for glaucoma.
