VALLEY STREAM, N.Y. (AP) - An employee of a Wal-Mart store on Long Island
has been suspended after he and a co-worker discharged pepper spray that
sickened 16 customers.
Wal-Mart spokeswoman Amy Wyatt says the company will conduct an
investigation into what happened Saturday at the Valley Stream store on
Greenacres Road. The suspended employee has not been identified and he does not
face charges.
Police say that the two employees discharged the noxious gas from an
unmarked canister while trying to determine its contents. Fans helped to
circulate the irritant.
Of the 16 shoppers who fell ill, eight were taken to an area hospital. They
were treated and released. The store was evacuated Saturday following the
incident.
