NEW ORLEANS, Aug. 29, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, the
Recirculating Farms Coalition hosted over 150 volunteers at its
community garden, Growing Local NOLA, for the "K10 Day of Service"
– an event planned by the City of New
Orleans to highlight the progress made in rebuilding during
the past 10 years after Hurricane Katrina.
"We were just overwhelmed by all the people offering to
volunteer, they were so enthusiastic!" said Marianne Cufone, Executive Director of the
Recirculating Farms Coalition.
Hurricane Katrina hit New
Orleans on August 29, 2005.
Much of the city was badly damaged by flooding when levees broke.
Homes, property and businesses were entirely destroyed and much of
the population was forced to leave.
"While we still have many things to address from the storm,
today was an amazing display of the commitment people who live in
New Orleans have to supporting and
maintaining the many resources that have developed post-Katrina,"
Cufone said.
Volunteers picked up trash, painted, raked, mulched, and did
other garden chores from 8:30am –
12:30pm. For photos and information –
