NEW YORK (Thomson Financial) - ViroPharma Inc. Monday said results from a
Phase 2 trial of antiviral drug maribavir showed the drug, when used as a
prophylaxis, reduced the rate of cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation and was well
tolerated when compared to placebo in bone marrow transplant patients.
In a 111-subject study, maribavir significantly reduced the rate of CMV
infection requiring treatment across all dose ranges compared to placebo, the
company said. No patients taking maribavir at any dose developed CMV disease,
compared to the placebo group in which three patients developed the disease.
There were also no reports of late CMV disease across any treatment groups with
a maximum follow-up period of five months post-transplant.
CMV is one of the infectious causes of significant morbidity and mortality
in transplant patients.
ViroPharma shares closed at $9.59 on Friday.
