FRANKFURT (Thomson Financial) - Ver.di trade union expects Deutsche Telekom
AG will slash up to 10,000 jobs in its network business by 2012, partly because
of improvements in glass fibre technology, according to Bonner Generalanzeiger
newspaper's Saturday edition.
"The new network technology will come and will have an impact" on jobs,
Ver.di management board member Lothar Schroeder told the newspaper.
The newspaper said as a result of technological improvements, Deutsche
Telekom would merge its voice and data networks.
Schroeder urged Deutsche Telekom to make a clear statement on how this would
affect employees.
A company spokesman declined comment to the newspaper regarding the 10,000
figure.
The newspaper, citing company managers, said the technological changes would
mean that by 2012, the number of personnel required in the network operations
would be 30-50 pct less than the current staff level.
Ver.di said about 20,000 employees are currently working at Deutsche
Telekom's network business.
