VENTURA, Calif., Feb. 10, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/
-- Ventura County Community College District Student Trustee
Ilse Maymes proposed bylaws to
officially organize the District Student Trustee Council during a
meeting at the District Administrative Center on Friday, January 22, 2016. The purpose of
the council is to represent the interests of students at
Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura
College; effectively communicate and act upon student
issues; discuss legislative issues affecting community colleges;
and share student opinions on bills with the Board of Trustees. The
council will consist of four members, including the Student Trustee
and the Associated Student Government President from each of the
colleges or a designee. All meetings and operations of the council
will comply with the provisions of the Ralph M. Brown Act,
California's open meeting law.
"We were pleased with the turnout and the strong representation
of each college, including the presidents of each college student
governments," said Dr. Bernard
Luskin, Chancellor of the Ventura
County Community College District. "My observation is that
the Associated Student Government officers who participated were
well informed. Ilse's goal to bring the ASG leadership together
with the colleges to explore the possibility of forming a student
council was very successful."
"This council will open the lines of communication," said
Student Trustee Ilse Maymes.
"Seeing the District student representatives come together to
exchange ideas and build upon each other was a great
experience. I hope to establish the District Student Trustee
Council before the end of my term. I'm excited to see what
we, and future generations, can accomplish together." "I commend
Trustee Maymes for her leadership role in organizing this forum to
insure the District Student Trustee Council maintains open and
progressive relationships with the Associated Students
Organizations at each college and throughout the District," said
Rick Post, J.D. VCCCD Vice
Chancellor of Educational Services. "We look forward to making the
council a strong advocate for all students within our
District."
The meeting and lunch was attended by the Ventura Community College District Chancellor,
Dr. Bernard Luskin, Vice Chancellor
of Educational Services, Rick Post,
Board of Trustee Chair, Larry
Kennedy, Trustee Vice Chair, Bernardo Perez, Moorpark, Oxnard, and Ventura college presidents (Luis Sanchez J.D., Dr. Greg Gillespie and Dr. James M. Limbaugh) along with representatives of
the college's associated student government leaders, student
advisors, and external affairs officers.
