Varian Semiconductor 4Q revenue rose 29% on market share increase (Varian Semiconduct E)

        NEW YORK (Thomson Financial) - Varian Semiconductor late Thursday reported
fiscal fourth-quarter earnings of $43.3 million, or 55 cents a share. 
    On an adjusted basis, earnings came in at 71 cents a share.
    The mean estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Financial was for earnings
of 69 cents a share.
    Revenue rose 29% to $298.7 million, above Wall Street's consensus view of
$294.05. 
    The Gloucester, Mass., chip equipment maker said it expects fiscal 2008
revenue of between $250 million and $260 million, and earnings per share of 53
cents a share 58 cents a share. The estimate assumes a tax rate of 31% for the
first quarter. 
    The stock closed Thursday at $47.60, down 8%.
