MISSISSAUGA, ON, Jan. 12, 2016 /CNW/ - UPS (NYSE:UPS) today announced that Christoph Atz, managing director of Spain and Portugal, has been appointed to president of UPS Canada. Michael Tierney, who began his career at UPS in 1981 and who has served as president since 2007, has retired from the company. Both organizational changes became effective January 1, 2016.

Atz becomes the 8th president in the company's 40-year history in Canada. He began his UPS career in 1992 as a management trainee in Germany and was promoted to finance and accounting supervisor that same year. As president, Atz is responsible for the performance and growth of operations across the country, which includes overseeing more than 13,000 employees.

"I would like to congratulate and welcome Christoph to Canada," states outgoing president Tierney. "His experience and knowledge of global markets will benefit businesses of all sizes in Canada."

Prior to his new role, Atz held several key finance positions, including finance manager at the UPS Europe Region office in Brussels, controller for the consolidated service centre in Dublin, and manager of finance and accounting for UPS Germany. In 2004, Atz became controller coordinator for UPS Europe. Following a special assignment at UPS headquarters in Atlanta, Atz relocated to Miami in 2006, where he worked as UPS South Florida district finance director. In January 2009, he took on the role of vice president of finance and accounting and later the role of vice president of operations in the Turkey, Middle East and Central Asia district, based in Dubai. Atz has been Spain and Portugal's managing director since 2014.

"I'm honoured to be selected to serve as president for UPS Canada. I look forward to working with the talented team in Canada to build on the legacy of success," states Atz. "Canadian products and business leaders are known globally for their quality, leadership and humanitarianism. UPS will continue to focus on supporting them with exceptional service, products and community outreach."

Tierney, a 34-year veteran of the company, began his career at UPS as a UPS package driver in Toronto.  His leadership, business expertise and dedication to the community has led to several management positions in operations, customs brokerage, business development, and in public affairs.

"Michael Tierney has made significant contributions to the company throughout his long career and has provided outstanding leadership to our Canadian operation," states Romaine Seguin, president of UPS's Americas Region. "He skillfully guided UPS Canada by executing growth and expansion strategies across the country and in specialized segments."

Under Tierney's leadership, UPS Canada has expanded operations and brand presence across Canada. Between 2012 and 2014, UPS Canada opened 11 new centres to serve a growing customer base in Atlantic Canada and British Columbia while expanding other centres across the country. Committed to international growth, Tierney worked with governing bodies to improve the efficiency and security for transportation of goods across the Canada-U.S. border.

In addition to his long-standing service to UPS, Tierney has acted as the chair of Volunteer Canada's Corporate Council on Volunteering, where he encouraged not only UPS employees, but also other companies and individuals, to volunteer their time.

"I still marvel at how far this organization has come over the last 34 years," said Tierney.  "I am proud of our accomplishments as a team, particularly in our adaptability in an increasingly competitive environment. I have been blessed to work with outstanding people and customers throughout my career."
