PARIS--French oil major Total SA (TOT) Monday said its Laggan-Tormore natural gas project off the Shetland Islands in the North Sea has started production.

The Laggan-Tormore field is a key component of the company's strategy to boost output this year, Total's chief of production and exploration, Arnaud Breuillac, said.

The project will eventually produce 90,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day, said the French company, which operates the field and owns a 60% stake in the project.

DONG Energy and SSE PLC (SSE.LN) each own a 20% stake in the project.
