'The Quiksilver Crossing's' Search for the Perfect Undiscovered
Wave Finally Reaches California
Ship's Journey Promotes Surf Exploration, Coral Reef Conservation, Education,
Adventure and Multiculturalism;
HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- After 6 years and over 90,000
nautical miles, the greatest voyage of surfing discovery ever undertaken will
reach the West Coast of the US for the first time. For The Quiksilver
Crossing: West Coast Tour 2005, the Indies Trader -- a converted salvage boat
-- will dock at San Diego (6/11), Dana Point (6/21), Newport Beach (6/28),
Malibu (7/7), Ventura/Channel Islands (7/12), Santa Barbara (7/19), Santa Cruz
(8/17), San Francisco (8/24) and Seattle (9/14).
The Quiksilver Crossing will host environmental fundraisers, press conferences,
boat tours, VIP cruises, educational events, and in-store promotional
appearances, all sponsored by Quiksilver (NYSE:ZQK), the boardriding industry
leader.
The Quiksilver Crossing is an ongoing exploration, adventure, education and
scientific mission traversing the world's oceans to seek out uncharted surf
breaks and locales in a quest for the perfect wave. Along with renowned
surfers Kelly Slater, Danny Fuller and Veronica Kay onboard to surf and
explore, The Quiksilver Crossing carries marine biologists from Reef Check, the
California-based reef conservation foundation, to study and help protect the
coral reefs they encounter. In addition, The Quiksilver Crossing is focused on
positive cultural exchange and the development of empathy for indigenous
peoples around the world.
The Route: Having started in Australia, The Quiksilver Crossing has visited
Africa, Europe, South and Central America, coming to the Eastern US last year,
and is now traveling up the West Coast.
The Mission: A typical trip involves scouting for new surf locations, a Reef
Check expedition and positive exchange with local cultures. If there is no
swell, Reef Check marine biologists, sponsored by Quiksilver, conduct surveys
in order to increase the knowledge of the value of the locations so they can be
preserved for future generations. Everyone connected with the project keeps
the surf spots a mystery, signing a confidentiality agreement not to disclose
locations.
The Reefs: Coral reefs are the second highest biodiversity ecosystem on earth
and are the largest living structure, visible from outer space. They are being
damaged faster than they can regenerate. The Reef Check program, launched in
1996, addresses the lack of a comprehensive scientific assessment and educates
the public about the value of coral reefs, threats to their health and
solutions to these problems. The Quiksilver Crossing and Reef Check are
actively involved in reef monitoring/conservation in over 80 countries. In
response to the similar problems faced by cold-water marine life, Reef Check is
announcing the launch of a new volunteer rocky reef-monitoring program for the
state of California. Wonder where all the abalone went? Check out

The Quiksilver Foundation will be hosting events during The Quiksilver
Crossing's West Coast Tour. The organizations benefiting from these events are
the Ocean Institute (http://www.ocean-institute.org/), Surfrider Foundation
(http://www.surfrider.org/) and Reef Check (http://www.reefcheck.org/). Also
benefiting is the QuikScience Partnership, a collaboration between the
University of Southern California's College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, the
USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies, Quiksilver, Inc. and the
Quiksilver Foundation that is designed to improve science and environmental
education for students in grades K-12.
