The Embassy of the Republic of the Sudan Celebrates Release of Sudanese Nationals

WASHINGTON, May 2 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The release of the Sudanese nationals, Sami al-Haj, Amir Mohamed al-Amir and Walid Mohamed Ali is much celebrated and we extend our appreciation to those whose moral sensibility was offended enough to mobilize a grassroots campaign and unwaveringly stood in solidarity with the innocent against this iniquity. Sami al-Haj and his two companions who were detained at Guantanamo Bay were released on Friday after six years in the custody of the U.S where they were held without a trial or any official charges brought against them. We would hope that this development gains momentum so that those who remain in prison, held under nothing more than spite and suspicion, are discharged and allowed to reunite with their families.

The release of the detainees is equally a credit to the hard work and sincere consultations that took place between the Sudanese Government and the United States. And much gratitude is due to both parties. This occasion highlights the benefits of cooperation, something that needs fostering so that we achieve objectives of common concern. Sudan, for its part, is committed and has worked towards realizing a better mode of relating to the U.S. The State Department's country report released a few days ago attests to this fact. The document recognizes Sudan's cooperation in the War on terror and notes that relationship in this regard "remained solid." The report cited several other exemplary actions Sudan has undertaken with regards to both national and international security.

The stigma stamped on Sudan has had to be carried by Sami, his two companions and the innocent citizens. Its consequences are felt daily. And in spite of all this, Sudan, as a peace loving country, remains undeterred and will continue to work in concert with all other nations to bring about peace within and without its borders so that there are more positive achievements made such as exemplified by the release of our citizens.
