Tesco and Sainsbury again fall short of UK grocery sector growth - TNS

LONDON (Thomson Financial) - Tesco Plc and J Sainsbury Plc fell short of the
7.3 percent growth recorded by the UK grocery sector in the 12 weeks to July 13,
while other discount stores' market share grew to record levels, according to
the latest data from industry watcher TNS Worldpanel.
Tesco, Britain's biggest retailer, grew 6.5 percent, losing 20 basis points
in market share year on year to 31.3 percent. Sainsbury fell further short,
growing 5.6 percent, with its market share falling to 15.9 percent from 16.2
percent for the same period last year.
Conversely, Wal-Mart Stores Inc's Asda, the UK's second largest supermarket
group and number four player William Morrison Supermarkets Plc each improved
their market share.
Asda grew 9 percent over the period, improving its market share to 16.9
percent from 16.7 percent last time. Morrison grew 9.1 percent and now holds a
market share of 11.3 percent, up from 11.1 percent last time.
TNS said that hard-pressed shoppers are shopping increasingly at discount
stores, helping to chip away at some of the larger retailers' market shares.
Discounters Aldi and Lidl saw year on year growth of 20 percent and 14
percent respectively, increasing their market shares to 2.9 percent and 2.4
percent respectively.
In total, discounters' market share grew collectively to 5.9 percent, higher
than ever before reported.
Meanwhile, the latest grocery sales data from Nielsen for the 12 weeks to
July 12 show Tesco growing 6.1 percent and Sainsbury 5.6 percent, behind Asda at
8.9 percent and Morrison at 9.5 percent.
