MADRID (EFE Dow Jones)--Telefonica SA (TEF) won't buy any Brazilian companies in the immediate future after a recent bid for GVT Holding (GVTT3.BR) proved unsuccessful, Chairman Cesar Alierta said Wednesday.
Last week, French rival Vivendi SA (VIV.FR) said it had secured control over GVT, a Brazilian broadband operator that Telefonica also wanted.
Vivendi Friday took control of 37.9% of GVT and has secured the rights to buy another 19.6%, giving it the majority of the operator.
Spanish telecommunications firm Telefonica already owns 50% of Brazilian mobile operator Vivo Participacoes SA (VIV) and fixed-line operator Telesp (TLPP3.BR).
