Growth of digital video applications in the security surveillance, automotive and consumer electronics markets fuels demand for advanced mixed signal integrated circuits
SAN JOSE, Calif., Sept. 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Techwell, Inc. (NASDAQ:TWLL) a leading designer of mixed signal video semiconductor solutions for the security surveillance, automotive and consumer electronics markets, today announced it has shipped its 20-millionth IC. The growth of Techwell's shipments can be attributed to a growing sense of need for security surveillance systems, increased adoption of navigation, DVD and back up camera applications in automobiles, and rising market demand for consumer electronic devices such as LCD and plasma televisions. Providing highly integrated mixed signal ICs that are based on proprietary IP and deliver superior video quality has given Techwell a strong market leadership in these areas.
Within the security surveillance market, Techwell has leveraged its mixed- signal video decoding technology and integrated a number of security specific functions required to display, store and transport analog video signals from security surveillance cameras. These advanced solutions allow Techwell to provide customers with high quality solutions that have superior levels of integration on a single semiconductor. According to J.P. Freeman, the market for recorders, servers and multiplexers used in security surveillance systems that can incorporate Techwell's mixed signal video semiconductors is expected to grow from $2.5 billion in 2004 to $6.0 billion in 2009, representing a compounded annual growth rate of 19%. Techwell currently estimates that its design expertise has allowed it to gain more than 60% market share in this rapidly expanding market.
Within the automotive market, Techwell has integrated its video decoding technology with advanced display processing including scaling, de-interlacing and edge enhancement to create one-chip solutions for in-car display applications. In more recent generations, Techwell has integrated a programmable timing controller to enable direct connection to LCD panels from leading display providers to the automotive market. According to Telematics Research Group, shipments of navigation, entertainment and driver information systems are expected to grow from a combined 16.5 million units in 2004 to a combined 47.2 million units in 2009, representing a compound annual growth rate of 23%. These systems are causing the proliferation of in-car LCD displays in automobiles. Techwell's value added LCD display solutions has enabled it to gain a leadership position in this emerging in-car display market with leading panel providers, system integrators and automotive manufacturers.
Since the company's first video decoder shipment in 1999, Techwell has introduced multiple generations of advanced NTSC/PAL video decoding solutions to improve overall video quality across its target markets. Video applications based on digital technology are experiencing rapid growth driven by significant improvements in the user experience, including enhanced video quality, increased functionality and reduced form factors. For example, according to Display Search, the advanced TV market is expected to grow from 13.2 million units in 2004 to 101.8 million units in 2009, representing a compounded annual growth rate of 50%. Techwell today ships over 1/2 million video decoders per month to the advanced TV, multifunction monitor (MFM), and DVD Recorder markets.
