14 athletes, including a gold medalist, to participate in games and Paralympics
COPPELL, Texas, July 1 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- More than a dozen Team Mannatech athletes, a group of world-class athletes who serve as role models for today's wellness generation, are expected to participate in the 2008 Olympic(R) Games. Team Mannatech athletes will have a significant presence in Beijing this August -- from Olympic hopefuls representing many countries to an Olympic torch bearer, sport announcer and two Paralympians.
"We are overjoyed for our athletes as they prepare for the 2008 Olympic Games," said former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Butch Johnson, senior director of community affairs and sports marketing for Mannatech. "Each of them embodies commitment to his or her respective sport and the resilience to reach the highest level of competition." http://www.teammannatech.com/ Of the Team Mannatech athletes competing in the trials, 14 have made their respective teams as trials continue. The Australian contingent includes Donna MacFarlane, steeplechase; Deborah Lovely, weightlifting; Glen Saville, basketball; Madeleine Pape, track; and Melissa Gorman, swimming. The New Zealand contingent includes Kirk Pittman and Jason Lockhead, beach volleyball; Natalie Wiegersma, swimming; and Eric Murray, rowing. The U.S. contingent includes Christal Ransom, judo; and Clarissa Chun, Spenser Mango and Joseph Betterman, wrestling. Jayson Jones, representing Belize, will compete in track.
Other Team Mannatech athletes are slated to participate in trials throughout June and July for a variety of sports, many in track and field. One athlete, Phillips Idowu of the United Kingdom, recently broke a triple jump world record and is expected to compete in the Olympics.
Even athletes who are generally dedicated to winter or non-Olympic sports are involved. To kick things off, Canadian lacrosse athlete Kyle Miller had the honor of carrying the Olympic torch last month in Shanghai. Miller led Team Canada to win the 2006 World Lacrosse Championship.
Best known as MVP of the 2006 Olympic gold medal Canadian women's hockey team, Hayley Wickenheiser will serve as a commentator for the softball games, one of the two Olympic sports she has played in. She is the first woman in history to play on both summer and winter Olympic teams.
Additionally, Canadian Lisa Franks will compete in wheelchair basketball and Australian Matthew Levy will compete in swimming during the Paralympic Games, held in China two weeks after the conclusion of the traditional games.
Team Mannatech athletes achieve and maintain optimal health through the utilization of cutting-edge training techniques and proper nutrition. The athletes make Mannatech supplements a part their daily training regimen and share the products they believe in with others. All members of Team Mannatech support the mission of the World Anti-Doping Agency, which is dedicated to preserving the integrity of sports competition and the health of all athletes. Mannatech products do not contain any substances banned by The International Olympic Committee.
