TAIPEI (XFN-ASIA) - Taiwan's ruling party chief has promised to resume
dialogue with China if he is elected president in weekend elections, saying it
was time for compromise.
A day ahead of the election, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate
Frank Hsieh -- who is trailing the opposition Kuomintang's Ma Ying-jeou -- said
he would open up toward China.
"I will resume dialogue, including with China," he told a press conference
here on the final day of campaigning before tomorrow's vote.
"I will open up, and I will also defend Taiwan's sovereignty.
"In the past the DPP was criticized for not opening up but I will be more
compromising, I will do better. That's my pledge," he added.
The Kuomintang's Ma has made boosting relations with Beijing a cornerstone
of his campaign, calling for close economic cooperation and a peace treaty.
