TAIPEI (XFN-ASIA) - The consumer price index in April stood at 104.20, up
3.86 pct year-on-year and up by a seasonally adjusted 0.51 pct month-on-month,
the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) said.
CPI is calculated using the 2006 benchmark of 100.
In March, CPI rose by a revised 3.95 pct year-on-year and rose by a
seasonally adjusted 0.02 pct month-on-month.
The April core price index, which excludes prices of fresh vegetables and
fruits, fishery products and energy, was up 3.10 pct from a year earlier and up
0.95 pct from March.
In March, the core price index rose by a revised 3.06 pct from the same
month a year earlier; it was down 0.61 pct month-on-month.
The wholesale price index in April rose 6.18 pct year-on-year to 111.82
(based on the 2006 benchmark of 100). On a month-on-month basis, it was up by a
seasonally adjusted 0.17 pct.
In March the WPI rose by a revised 7.24 pct year-on-year and declined by a
seasonally adjusted 0.39 pct month-on-month.
Wu Chung-ming, a section chief with the DGBAS, attributed the year-on-year
CPI growth to an increase of 9.75 pct in food prices.
The growth of 6.18 pct in WPI was due to high prices of crude oil, natural
gas, petroleum products and base metals.
However, the 9.24 pct year-on-year appreciation of the Taiwan dollar against
the US dollar helped offset WPI growth, the official added.
For the first four months of this year, CPI rose by an average 3.65 pct. The
government has forecast full-year CPI growth of 1.98 pct.
The January-April core price index rose 2.86 pct and the WPI rose 8.05 pct.
In April, the import price index rose 20.41 pct year-on-year and was up 2.19
pct month-on-month in US dollar terms, the DGBAS said.
The April export price index rose 5.63 pct from the same month last year and
increased 1.23 pct from March, also in US dollar terms, it said.
For the first four months of the year, the import price index rose 19.89 pct
and the export price index rose 4.87 pct.
