MOUNTAIN VIEW, California, Jan. 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Based on its independent analysis of the service assurance market, Stratecast | Frost & Sullivan recognizes Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) with the Stratecast 2014 Global Visionary Innovation Leadership Award for Operations & Monetization Evolution.

In acknowledging its leadership in this field, Stratecast | Frost & Sullivan has cited Alcatel-Lucent's work with Telefonica to deploy a new global OSS architecture to transform worldwide operations using a streamlined, automated process. This project led to the development and introduction of the Alcatel-Lucent Motive Dynamic Operations Portfolio in June 2014, which was first to address the unique operational requirements of cloud networks.

Currently, the numerous O&M solutions that Tier 1 communications service providers (CSPs) have deployed are siloed by nature in terms of network technology and business process support. Many use proprietary management systems and require unique adapters and interfaces to communicate. The integration issues inherent in these systems have made it challenging to streamline the change management process.

"Alcatel-Lucent's integrated dynamic service assurance OSS platform will enable Telefonica to implement best practices and processes in operations," said Tim McElligott, senior consulting analyst at Stratecast. "It also compelled Alcatel-Lucent to reconsider its software architecture approach to the market, resulting in the creation of a new portfolio built to simultaneously address the requirements for IP-, NFV- and SDN-driven networks. Overall, the project now meets Telefonica's longstanding need for change management, automation, and optimized operations."

A key design change in Alcatel-Lucent's new operations software model is the move away from inflexible embedded processes. The new model provides an automated framework for describing the ways in which physical and virtual networks should behave, offering a unified view across the network as operators begin to implement NFV technologies. This new service model is more in line with the cloud/SDN approach demonstrated by companies such as Google that fosters abstraction, automation and actionable analytics.

"Alcatel-Lucent has aligned its vision with Telefonica's desire for a unified assurance model," McElligott noted. "Its portfolio relies on an open-source, Web-scale, and big-data software architecture to run more progressively than legacy OSS solutions and tackle the nuances of high-volume cloud services."

Furthermore, the Alcatel-Lucent solution improves the efficiency of operations service assurance processes with a 25 percent direct cost reduction through automatic filtering. It can automatically process and reduce over 200 million alarms per month to less than 82,000 trouble tickets and solve nearly 25 percent of them.

"This award recognizes the outstanding teamwork and collaboration between Telefonica and the Alcatel-Lucent teams," said Arun Kohli, head of Alcatel-Lucent's Operations Support Systems business. "Both companies worked tirelessly to eliminate many of today's manual and labor-intensive OSS challenges to introduce a more streamlined, integrated and automated approach to service assurance management. This enables Telefonica to better realize the full potential of its all-IP network and the greater agility required for operating a network in the cloud."

Each year, Stratecast | Frost & Sullivan presents this award to the company that has demonstrated the ability to leverage global Mega Trends and integrate the vision into processes to achieve strategic excellence. The award recognizes the efficacy of the recipient's innovative process and the impact it has on business and society at large.
