OSLO (Thomson Financial) - StatoilHydro ASA has made a gas discovery at
production licence 395 off the north coast of Norway, the Norwegian Petroleum
Directorate (NPD) said this morning.
"The well is located 200 kilometres north of the North Cape, and gas was
proven," the NPD said.
"(However) the gas/water contact was not proven, and it is therefore too
early to estimate the size of the discovery."
StatoilHydro has a 50 percent stake in the licence, BG Norge has 30 percent,
and state-owned oil firm Petoro has the remaining 20 percent.
Separately, the NPD said StatoilHydro and US firm ConocoPhillips have
drilled dry wells elsewhere in the North Sea.
StatoilHydro's exploration well at licence 283, 320 kilometres west of
Sandnessjoen, came up dry, the NPD said, while ConocoPhillips' well at
production licence 273, 25 kilometres east of the Valhall field, similarly
failed to find hydrocarbons.
